Hello, fellow ghouls, goblins, cats, opossums, and (probably, most likely) humans. I’m Jillian, and this is my blog!
What is this blog about?
It's whatever I intend it to be. That isn’t a clear and concise answer, but you can expect a lot from this blog. Here are some sample subjects and topics that I intend to write about:
Marketing:
How to create valuable content for your audience
What goes in a sell sheet?
Taking psychic damage in front-facing roles
Personal:
Daily neurodivergence quirks
Shareable diaries
My very non-traditional wedding
Fashion:
Why I don’t work in the industry anymore
You should care about what you wear
For multiple reasons!
Everyone should have basic sewing skills
These are just a few examples of the many things I have on my mind, and I cannot wait to share them with you all! Additionally, if you have any suggestions about topics…leave a comment below!
Why am I starting this blog?
There are a few reasons why I wanted to start this blog. I’ve always loved the idea of having an entirely written creative outlet, and boy, do I love yappin’. Here is a quick yap for you:
I genuinely miss the days of MySpace, where you didn’t have to worry about the algorithm. Blogging, posting updates, sharing photos, having a personalized profile (I think everybody learned a bit of coding back then), and having a profile song. That was so fun.
Don’t get me wrong—I love TikTok and Instagram—but the algorithm and culture have made it so everybody must have a “niche.” The algorithm rewards you if you keep posting about your niche, but if you want to post about anything else, then it is tough luck. Either that post gets buried, or the engagement just isn’t there. I miss the days when we could be multifaceted human beings online.
One of the main reasons I don’t like this “niche” approach to the algorithm is that it is often tied to your professional life. We are seeing influencers have less influencing power as consumers are starting to follow a brand personality or “face” instead. It leaves a bad taste in my mouth.
But I digress…
Blogging is also just plain fun for me. As mentioned above, I love having a free, creative outlet, and blogging provides that! Sometimes, I want to vent (like my session in the blue block up there), and other times, I want to offer meaningful solutions to problems. You’ll get both of these things out of this blog.
I want this blog to be collaborative.
I want this to be a community where people feel comfortable conversing. Comment on the posts, suggest certain topics and meet and hang out with people. We’re all in this together!
Okay…now, who the heck are you?
“Um, I’m Jillian. I’m a person, and I have a job and two cats, and yeah!” ⬅️ This is what I would usually say because I don’t know how to introduce myself. But here is a quick rundown:
I’m Jillian. I’m 28. I am from Ohio, and I still live here, unfortunately. After six years of undergrad, I graduated from the University of Cincinnati with a degree in Fashion Design from the College of Design, Architecture, Art, and Design (DAAP) at the height of the pandemic (May 2020, baby!). I always like to clarify when I graduated because that was such a defining point in my life, and things kept falling into place after that. Here is me in my senior year of college during a muslin critique of my thesis two weeks before the world stopped:
I work in Marketing (surprise, I don’t use my degree professionally!) in the tabletop industry. After graduating, I couldn’t land a job, so I started working at a smoothie shop in Columbus while doing small graphic design projects, including for my brother’s board game company. After a while, my brother hired me full-time to do marketing and sales for him at Capstone Games.
I left that job about a year after starting full-time to pursue a fashion design job, and boy, was that the wrong decision. I got a job in the industry and was reminded how much it isn’t for me. That is a story for another time. After two years of job-hopping, I found my place in the tabletop industry at Brotherwise Games. I have been here for a little over a year and a half now, and I don’t see myself leaving any time soon.
Besides my professional life, I love food, music, sewing, and reading. I have two adorable cats who are my children, a partner with whom I’ve been with for nine years, and an insatiable curiosity for “what’s next.” Really, I am just a girl that thinks like this half the time:
TLDR;
My name is Jillian. I am pretty cool and starting a blog because I love to yap.
Anyway, I hope you enjoyed this introduction! If you did, I’d appreciate it if you would subscribe so you can read my future posts. Thanks, and see you next time!
Oh she yappin'
Yay! Blog time!
